TRACT SHOWING THAT THE SEVETH DAY SHOULD BE OBSERVED AS THE SABBATH

by Thomas Motherwell Preble, printed by Murray & Kimball, 1845
hosted on Google Drive

Preble was a theologian who converted to Adventism very early on in the Movement. He published this tract which was widely used to canvass for new Adventists.  Some years later he studied his way out of Adventism and began to write against it. In 1867, he published the book THE FIRST DAY SABBATH, which is also available in this library.

THE URANTIA BOOK

by Anonymous, published by The Urantia Foundation, 1955

hosted by The Urantia Foundatoin website

This book has tremendous historical importance to Adventism. In the late 1800's,  Dr. William S. Sadler noticed that Ellen G. White had a remarkable prophetic track record, which he calculated to be over 80%.  At the same time I rejected her reputation as a prophetess of the Christian God, since 100% predictive accuracy is required of Bible prophets. He concluded that her information came from the spirit world, and he began to investigate the claims of Spiritualism. Shortly after leaving Adventism, he founded the Urantia Society, which became the world's largest Spiritualist organization. The Urantians utilized "sleeping prophets" who were given visions of the non-material world. It is significant to note that there are great similarities, as well as significant differences, between the descriptions of the Great Controversy as outlined with Ellen White and the Urantian sleeping prophets. There is good, but not conclusive, evidence that one of the Kellogg brothers became one of the sleeping prophets. Interesting. Most readers would rather consult a summary of the contents of this book, and a video lecture included in this library accomplishes that for our readers.

THE MIND AT MISCHIEF

by Dr. William S. Sadler, published by Funk & Wagnalls (New York and London), 1929

hosted on Google Drive

Dr. Sadler left Adventism and started the world's largest Spiritualist church in the world-- The Urantians.  He regarded Ellen G. White as only one of two "mediums" whose manifestations were genuine, and this statement from his book is almost certainly in reference to her:  In the interests of scientific accuracy on the one hand, and of strict fairness on the other, it becomes necessary to explain that there are one or two exceptions to the general statement that all cases of psychic phenomena which have come under my observation have turned out to be those of auto-psychism. It is true that practically all the physical phenomena have proved to be fraudulent, while the psychic phenomena are almost invariably explainable by the laws of psychic projection, transference, reality shifting, etc. But many years ago I did meet one trance medium, a woman now deceased, whose visions, revelations, etc., were not tainted with spiritualism. As far as my knowledge extends, at no time did she claim to be under the influence of spirit guides or controls, or to communicate messages from the spirits of departed human beings. Her work was largely of a religious nature and consisted of elevated sayings and religious admonitions. I never had the privilege of making a thorough- going psychic analysis of this case, and am not in a position to express myself as to the extent to which her revelations originated in the subconscious realms of her own mind. I make mention of the case merely to record the fact that I have met one instance of psychic phenomena apparently of the trance order that was not in any way associated with spiritualism.

THE BOOK OF ENOCH: STANDARD VERSION

by Dr. Jay Winter, published by Winter Publications, 2015

hosted on Google Drive

The Book of Enoch is a pseudepigraphal book that claims to be written by Enoch but was actually written in the Second Temple Period.  It is made of two sections, with the older having been written between 300-200 BC and the younger part between 200-100 BC. The book contains many themes and apocalyptic imagery which are also found in the writings of several New Testament authors, not the least of which was Peter. It was never included in the Jewish cannon since no original Hebrew version could be located. It was not included in the majority of Christian cannons even though it had respected proponents, including Tertullian. Canonicity aside, it remained highly respected and has recently found renewed interest.
This book is highly supportive of the idea that the Sons of God in Genesis 6 refer to fallen angelic beings called Watchers who mated with human women.

MISCHIEVOUS ANGELS OR SETHITES?

by Chuck Missler, Koinonia House, 1997
hosted on Koinonia House website

Examines why the Hebrew text of Genesis 6, in coordination with other passages in Scripture, support the Fallen Angel View. Explains the church history of how around the 5th Century Christian scholars tried to move away from the widely accepted view that Genesis 6 taught Fallen Angels to the Sethite view as a way of saving face from the higher critics.

FALLEN ANGELS AND THE HEROS OF MYTHOLOGY

by John Flemming, published by Hodges, Foster, and Figgis (Dublin), 1879

Supportive of the idea that the Sons of God in Genesis 6 refer to fallen angels who mated with human women.

THE FIRST DAY SABBATH

by Thomas M. Preble, published by the W. A. C. P. Association, 1867
hosted on Google Drive

Thomas Preble was a theologian who converted to Adventism and wrote a book in favor of Sabbatarianism.  Some years later he found many problems with Sabbatarian theology, left Adventism, and wrote a book in favor of the Sabbath being changed by the Apostles from Saturday to Sunday.   Along the way he makes a lot of good observations, even if his thinking about the whole matter was a bit off.

by Ellis H. Skolfield, printed by Fish House Publishing, 2004
hosted on Google Drive

The author explains the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation with great mathematical precision, offering the reader a non-cultic analysis of these prophecies.  He builds a strong case that the antichrist of End Times is Islam, rather than the Papacy.

by Dr. Desmond Ford, 1980

Dr. Ford systematically lays out the case against the Adventist Doctrine of the Investigative Judgment.  This paper can be compared with others written to support the doctrine.

SHEOL, HADES, PARADISE, AND GEHENNA - Death and the Afterlife chapter 3

by Dr. Robert A. Morey, printed by Bethany House Publishers, 1984
hosted on Bible Study Manuals website

The King James Bible mistranslated the Hebrew word 'sheol' many times, opening up the way for the concept of Soul Sleep.

by Dr. Desmond Ford (Australian Theologian), printed by Desmond Ford Publications, 1981

Supports the concept of a Sabbath in Genesis. Pro-Sabbatarian.

by Robert D. Brinsmead, published by Verdict Publications, 1982
hosted on Google Drive

Desmond Ford wrote a paper in support of the concept of a Sabbath in Genesis (see The Forgotten Day above). Robert Brinsmead wrote a rebuttal of Ford's paper.
Interesting contrast. May the best scholar win!

CARPENTER AND THE FLAT EARTH MOVEMENT - Plane Truth chapter 5

by Bob Forrest, Michael Behrend, and Lois Schadewald, 2015
hosted on Cambridge University website

Adventists pioneers who understood the importance of the Earth being flat for biblical Sabbath observance.

by Ellen G. White, 1860
hosted on EGW Writings website

Ellen White talks about how God the Father chose to exalt Jesus to an elevated position, and that when this happened, Lucifer became a jealous rival.

by Ellis Skolfield, published by Fish House Publishing, 2007

Demonstrates that the prophecies of Daniel work very well when they are applied to the concept that Islam is the Anti-Christ of the End Times.  Very interesting numeral patterns in Daniel are explored.

by Dr. Samuele Bacchiocchi, published by The Pontifical Gregorian University Press, 1977
hosted on Google Drive

This book launched the current anti-Sabbatarian movement because it presented fanciful interpretations of Colossians 2.  Essentially, he taught that Paul required the keeping of the annual and weekly Sabbaths and was merely condemning the man-made regulations of the Judaizers for their keeping.  His arguments were so poor that a group of scholars led by D. A. Carson worked as a team to investigate the claims of Sabbatarian theology, and Carson et. al. published their response to Bacchiocchi in the form of their 1982 book, From Sabbath to Lord's Day, which is also available in this library.

D A. Carson et.al., published by Wipf and Stock Publishers, 1982
hosted on Google Drive

The Carson team refuted all the major points of Dr. Samuele Bacchiocchi's Sabbatarian-friendly claims and conclusions as an answer to Bacchiocchi's book (see From Sabbath to Sunday above). Among other things, the Carson team proved beyond any reasonable doubt that the Hebrew text of the key passages excludes the possibility of a Sabbath prior to the Exodus.

by Robert D. Brinsmead, published by Verdict Publishing, 1981
hosted on Google Drive

This paper, written by a former Australian Adventist Robert D. Brinsmead, outlines the biblical and historical case against Sabbatarian theology and the historical perspective that the Catholic Church changed the Sabbath.

by Aaron Nyman, 1914
hosted on Google Drive

Nyman examines the biblical and historical errors found in the early prophetic interpretations of the founders of Adventism-- much of which is still taught today.

by Robert D. Brinsmead, from Verdict magazine Vol. 1 No. 5, September 1982

Brinsmead's objections to Sabbatarian theology from his 1981 book, Sabbatarianism Re-Examined, in outline form with some extra observations.

by Bryan W. Ball, published by Avondale Academic Press., 2015
hosted on Google Drive

This paper by the Australian Seventh-day Adventist researcher, Bryan Ball, is most interesting in that it does not mention the most important thing about English Sabbatarianism, and that is that King Charles would have made the Church of English into a Sabbatarian state church if it had not been for the work of his court chaplain, Peter Heylyn, who wrote the book, History of the Sabbath.  This Heylyn book is also part of the Adventism and Sabbatarian Research Library

by Robert Cox, published by Edinburgh, Maclachlan & Stewart, 1865
hosted on Google Drive

This large book explores every text in the Bible that has anything to do with Sabbatarian issues and allows the reader to make his or her own decisions.  He includes scholarly commentaries on many of the passages.  Sabbatarians often quote him out of context in that they will give a passage from his book and claim that Cox supported the Sabbatarian view when he was merely reporting the view.

by Peter Heylyn, 1636
hosted on Google Drive

The Church of England came very close to being Sabbatarian and to keeping the Jewish Sabbath in the Jewish manner during the reign of King Charles I who succeeded King James.  King Charles I ordered his court chaplain, Peter Heylyn, to research the subject and get a full report back to him as soon as possible.  Heylyn did the research and put together his response to the king.  As a result of this document, the Church of England did not become Sabbatarian.  This whole story is not included in the Seventh-day Adventist prophetess, Ellen G. White's book on the history of the Sabbath entitled The Great Controversy.

by Francis D. Nichol
Published in 1951

This official publication of the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists defends Ellen White from the accusations of her critics up until that point in SDA history.  In 1951 Adventism had not yet been faced with the "bombshell" revelations of the 1970's and 1980's, such as the discovery of the 1919 Bible Conference Minutes in 1974 and the publication of Walter Rea's book, The White Lie, in 1983.  His work was much easier in the early 1950's than it would have been had he written this book decades later.  It is worthwhile reading for anyone who wishes to research the prophetic claims of Ellen G. White on his or her own.

Canright was almost certainly the highest-placed Seventh-day Adventist leader in the early days of Adventism to leave the Church and to expose a wide variety of non-flattering things about it.
